In digital photography, dark frame subtraction is a way to minimize image noise. It takes advantage of the fact that a component of image noise is the same from shot to shot: a picture is first taken with the shutter closed; ideally this would be completely black but in actuality it will have some variation. This “dark frame” is then subtracted from a regular exposure. This has been done for some time in scientific imaging. Some consumer digital cameras do this automatically.
